Over the years, our teeth discolor. However, many people want that bright white smile back. For correct treatment, it is important to distinguish between the different causes of tooth discoloration.

On the one hand, there are external factors such as smoking, poor oral hygiene, coffee, tea and red wine. Most of this discoloration can be removed by a thorough cleaning at the dentist or dental hygienist.

On the other hand, there are internal factors that can discolor our teeth. Certain antibiotics (tetracyclines) produce a typical band-like yellow to gray discoloration. As we age, our teeth will also become yellower. This is because our tooth enamel wears down and more dentin is formed.

We are happy to look into whether “home bleaching” is a suitable solution for you. For this, an impression of your teeth is taken and custom-made transparent braces are made. These braces are filled with bleaching gel at home and worn for an average of 7 to 10 nights. As a patient, you determine the duration and therefore the result of bleaching. The active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide. This substance binds with the pigments that cause discoloration in your teeth. If you continue to drink tea or coffee, over time the teeth will become slightly discolored again. You can repeat the treatment again after 6 months to 1 year if desired.

It is important to note that European legislation stipulates that a concentration of hydrogen peroxide from 0.1% to 6% can only be obtained from the dentist. Whitening toothpaste available in the supermarket, pharmacy or the beauty salon has a concentration <0.1% and is therefore insufficiently effective. The coarse grain of this toothpaste polishes the enamel a bit more compared to regular toothpaste. This allows superficial discolorations to be removed somewhat better, but because of the abrasive action, they can intensify tooth sensitivity.

Intrinsic discoloration, such as tetracyline discoloration, is generally difficult to improve with bleaching. In that case, porcelain veneers can be a durable and aesthetic solution.
